Here, you’ll find answers to common questions to help you navigate the playtesting process
What is playtesting?
Playtesting is the process of testing a game in its development stage to gather feedback on gameplay mechanics, balance, and overall enjoyment.
Who can be a playtester?
We welcome players of all skill levels and backgrounds. Whether you’re a casual gamer or a hardcore enthusiast, your perspective will help us and developers create a better experience.
Playtesters must be over the age of 18 to participate.
How do I sign up to be a playtester?
To sign up, simply fill out our playtester application form here. We’ll review your application and get back to you with details via email if you are selected.
What can I expect during the playtesting sessions?
During playtesting, you’ll play the game and provide feedback on your experience. Sessions may be held in person or online, moderated or unmoderated, depending on the game’s format and your location. Expect to engage in discussions about what you liked, what could be improved, and any bugs you encountered.
To learn more about moderated vs unmoderated, as well as the requirements for each, head to our Quick Guide to Unmoderated vs Moderated Playtesting page.
How long do playtesting sessions usually last?
Sessions typically last between 1 to 3 hours, depending on the complexity of the game and the number of features being tested.
I’m under the age of 18, can I participate?
Participants must be at least 18 years of age to participate as a Pixel Mechanics playtester.
Where is Pixel Mechanics located?
Pixel Mechanics is located at 3559 Bigelow Blvd, Pittsburgh, PA 15213. Parking is free! We share the parking lot with HEBI Robotics.
Do I need to have prior experience with game testing?
No prior experience is required! We’re looking for fresh perspectives, so your honest feedback is what matters most.
Will I be compensated for my time?
Yes! Compensation varies by project. Some playtesters receive gift cards, game credits, exclusive content, or even monetary compensation. Details will be provided before your testing session.
Can I share my experience or feedback with others?
We appreciate your enthusiasm, but you must keep your experiences and feedback confidential due to NDA compliance outlined in the Playtester Agreement form. This helps us maintain the integrity of the testing process and protects the privacy of the developers and studios we test for.
What if I encounter bugs or issues while playing?
Please report any bugs or issues you find during playtesting. Before you begin any playtest, we’ll provide you with a specific format for reporting these, as well as any known bugs to be on the lookout for that we may already be aware of.
What if the game I am testing becomes bugged and unplayable half way through a session?
Games break (a lot), so you’ll still receive your full compensation as if you participated in a full session, regardless of a project’s playability.
How will my feedback be used?
Your feedback will be compiled and analyzed by our Pixel Mechanics research team to create actionable statistics for our partnered developers to identify the strengths and weaknesses to their games we playtest.
What if I can’t make it to a scheduled session?
Life happens! We’ll catch you next time and reach out for a future session opportunity.
How can I stay updated on future playtesting opportunities?
You can follow us on our social media channels and subscribe to our newsletter for updates on future playtesting opportunities and game news!
Do I need to bring anything with me to an in-person session?
Please bring a legally issued photo ID (i.e. Driver’s License) or Passport so we are able to verify your identify and age.
Do I need to buy any special equipment for a remote playtest?
Nope! Just a PC, stable internet connection, and private, quiet area for testing.
I signed up to be a playtester, why haven’t I received any emails about being selected to participate yet?
Like online games, matchmaking takes time, or sometimes there may not be any games on deck to playtest. Additionally, based on your gaming preferences, we may not have any playtests that would match well with your interests. Keep an eye on your email for when the time comes!
Will Pixel Mechanics share my personal information with anyone?
No. Pixel Mechanics will never share your personal information with anyone. Review our Privacy Policy here.
Is this considered a job?
No, being a Pixel Mechanics playtester is not a job, but does indeed create networking opportunities and looks great on resumes for folks trying to get into the game industry!
